Pat Miletich is not only an icon as a fighter but as a coach as well. Amassing championships both inside and outside the cage, he is one of the most respected names in the mixed martial arts community. This is an exclusive interview with Pat Miletich.
SwoleScience- Pat, you have amassed an amazing mixed martial arts record with five world championship titles and have produced 14 world champions, what is in your opinion, the single most important quality that a fighter can have to become a champion?
Pat Miletich– The single quality a fighter must have is the refusal to give up. My mentality was to win a world title or die. There was nothing else that mattered in my life at that time. Complete focus or quit!
SwoleScience-Your last fight was an impressive win in 2008, do you plan on returning to the cage any time soon in the wake of the recent trend that older fighters are continuing to do well in combat sports?
Pat Miletich- We have been in talks with a big name and his camp for a fight, but we will see what happens with that. People will like the matchup if it comes off.
SwoleScience- You have 18 wins by submission, what would you say is your favorite submission? and in your opinion the most effective in modern MMA?
Pat Miletich- I have zero favorite submissions. The one that makes the other guy give up would be my choice.
SwoleScience- Pat, how have and do you condition yourself and your fighters to perform so well? What strength training and endurance techniques do you find the most effective?
Pat Miletich- Anaerobic and aerobic crossover is essential. Anything that blows up your muscles and lungs at the same time works. The rest is secret. (laughs)
SwoleScience- Which fighter past or present would you have liked to have fought regardless of weight in their prime?
Pat Miletich- Royce Gracie. Because he was the name to beat at the time.
SwoleScience- Pat, what is your stance on dietary supplements in combat sports? and what supplements do you or have you used for pre-workout or recovery?
Pat Miletich– I use protein drinks and anti-oxidants
SwoleScience- What is your favorite combat sports drill that you have found to be the most effective improving for conditioning and skill?
Pat Miletich- Takedowns, sparring and grappling. Nothing replaces live go’s.
SwoleScience- Miletich Fighting Systems is located Bettendorf, Iowa, is it open to amateur fighters who want world class training? are there any other locations of your system of fighting? and if so where can we find these locations?
Pat Miletich– I no longer train fighters. I am now focused on my family, broadcasting, LEO and military training and tv projects. I do still train though.
SwoleScience- You are a commentator on StrikeForce now, when is the next fight and where can our readers view the fight and hear your commentary?
Pat Miletich- I will be working the March 5th show in Columbus, Ohio during the Arnold Classic weekend. Huge show!!!
SwoleScience- Pat, what is the most important piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring fighters?
Pat Miletich- Unless your doing it to be a world champion, don’t waste your time or ours. I hate people that half ass anything.
SwoleScience- Thank you so much for the interview Pat and we look forwarding to speaking to you again in the future and catching you on the next StrikeForce fight.
