Product Review: OX Nutrition All Natural Meal Replacement Shake & Hydro Preworkout

In our recent interview with professional strongman Kevin Nee, he introduced us to his new supplement line that is “made by athletes, for athletes”. This introduction coupled with a very impressive collection of stories of how his own supplements have helped him recover and perform, peaked our interest to say the least. So within a few days,  OX Nutrition was able to send us over a few of their products and these are the real world results over the course of several weeks of intense training with their unique preworkout and recovery protein.

OX Nutrition Hydro Preworkout and Meal Replacement Shake

OX nutrition is the brainchild of professional strongman Kevin Nee and is a direct throwback to basic, quality, and core supplements that are essential for athletic development. Recently the supplement industry has faced an influx of incredibly complex products that have seemingly endless ingredient list of compounds, most of which you probably cannot pronounce. The backlash from this has been tainted products, ineffective ‘padded’ supplements with fillers and unnecessary ingredients. To help alleviate this issue, OX nutrition promises core quality products that simply get the job done. Let’s see how their supplements stack up.

OX Nutrition Hydro Preworkout

OX Nutrition Hydro Preworkout

The basis behind Hydro is simple but also very unconventional for a preworkout supplement. A preworkout supplement’s purpose is to stimulate and fuel the athlete prior to athletic stimulation in order to provide an added level of consistent athletic exertion to effectively breakdown the muscles further, and longer than normally. This added stimulation translates into not only added endurance but the eventual accelerated development of athletic performance. OX Hydro provides energy and vasodilation but also supplies carbohydrates for natural energy in conjunction with a balanced electrolyte blend for hydration. There is also amino acids for vasodilation, as well as amino acids for focus and anticatabolisation. This exceptional combination of nutritional support through multiple pathways in the body is very atypical of a normal preworkout supplement, which are generally solely supportive of stimulation of the nervous system and vasodilatation. The purpose of vasodilatation is to expand the amount of oxygen, nutrients, and endurance ability of the exerted muscle tissue.

OX Hydro powder

Taste and Mixing

OX Hydro comes in one flavor and is slightly effervescent. It has a hint of lemon/lime favor that is not overly sweet but is reminiscent of watered down powdered gatorade. It tastes great and mixes extremely easy due to being a very fine powder that is effervescent.

The product was taken at least once a day and sometimes multiple times a day depending on exertion. First and foremost the product digests and sits every well within the body post-consumption and there were no digestive issues noted what so ever. The carbohydrates are the first welcomed addition as they are the perfect amount that is just enough to boost the body’s natural energy cycle into motion, as excessive carbohydrates prior to working out can actually bog down the body. The second exemplary factor is the electrolytes which were essential during two-a-days and cardiovascular intensive strength training. Electrolytes are the basis for proper rehydration of athletes by replacing the vital nutrients lost during excessive athletic activity. This product provided an additional buffer of quality electrolytes that would help prevent any potentially dangerous and performance debilitating dehydration. The amino acids present serve three distinct purposes- L-glutamine is essential to recovery, prevention of catabolization and protection of immune system. L-Arginine and Citrulline Malate are utilized for vasodilatation, and endurance. L-tyrosine and L-Glycine are implemented for neurotransmitter activity and mental focus.

The pump from the product is not overly consuming in the way that some preworkouts can cause uncomfortable pumps. It seems to focus less upon the physical feeling of the ‘pump’ and more so on more blood flow for endurance.

The energy level from this product is derived mainly from caffeine and the mental acuity amino acids. There is no specified amount of caffeine dictated on the ingredients list of Hydro but it is on the lower end of stimulant content when compared to other preworkouts. The serving is one scoop, yet sometimes another scoop was consumed in between 2-a-days or during workouts when additional energy was needed. The energy level is not jittery nor thermogenic (excess sweating and heart rate). The product allows the user a very easy, controllable and basic stream of energy that is perfect for cardiovascular activities such as combat sports and strength training as well .

Overall, this is a great preworkout that is not overly stimulating, provides hydration, endurance pumps, and recovery amino acids.

One serving of OX Nutrition Hydro is one scoop, which provides 25 servings at a cost of $34.95 directly from OX Nutrition, which in turn amounts to approximately $1.39 per serving. Within the overall realm of preworkouts this is on the average end of the spectrum. Given its basic ingredients, energy, and hydration effects, it is a very versatile product that is a good value.

The first personal critique would be that for extra energy sometimes 1.5 to 2 scoops had to be consumed and therefore this brought down the number of servings per tub. A slightly stronger stimulant profile would be invaluable to this product such as the inclusion of more caffeine. The second issue can also be a positive depending upon the goals of the buyer, which is the absence of beta alanine and creatine. While OX Nutrition does provide a separate creatine product, and creatine is sometimes intentionally avoided by combat sports athletes and other athletes seeking to avoid water weight, it is still a very important preworkout ingredient. Beta alanine is an amino acid derivative with regard to fatigue and endurance that would be an added improvement, especially with improving the ‘kick’ of the product. Despite these personal critiques, the product does what it says- provides energy, hydration and vasodilation without any excessive compounds or fillers.

OX Nutrition Hydro is an excellent and extremely versatile product that supplies an athlete with essential preworkout nutrition and energy for whatever their athletic endeavor, and his highly recommended.

Taste and Mixing

Ox Nutrition sent over their vanilla flavor which tastes like a slightly less sweet and watered down vanilla ice cream. A packet or a few drops of stevia was able to sweeten up the shake ever so slightly to make it taste more personally appealing. This drink by no means has a negative taste but goes down better with some extra sweetener. The instructions say to mix 2 scoops with 10oz of water, and yes, surprisingly, it will mix with only 10oz of water. The consistency of this product is very watery, without any clumping or negative textures present. The watery consistency makes it very easy to consume quickly.

The instructions for consumption of this product are to consume it 2 to 3 times per day, as a meal replacement, which can be done depending on your goals, but for all intensive purposes of this review this product was used as a post recovery shake once per day. At first glance this product resembles a standard protein supplement but this not your standard protein product and this is due to several factors present.

First, unlike most ‘whey protein’ supplements, there is no soy in this product, simply whey protein and casein. The whey protein is quickly absorbed and feeds the anabolic needs of the body at the moment, while the slower digesting casein protein metabolizes in the body over an extended time period to slowly continue to support the available anabolic window. This two pronged attack is quite a common trend in protein supplement but this protein is pure whey and casein with respect to it’s protein content. The second factor, is the multivitamin and antioxtiant blend. As aforementioned the blend features a very complete and high quality multivitamin that implements easier digestible forms of the actual vitamins/minerals. The antioxidant blend contains everything from CoQ10 to Wild blueberry extract to protect the athlete’s body from the oxidative stress of working out. Another noteworthy ingredient is the addition of ‘Microlactin’, which are bioactive milk compounds that research has shown helps speed up recovery and promote joint health.

With this product, there was no gastrointestinal upset ever experienced which displays superior absorption when compared to other protein supplements but there was a marked increase in flatulence, which can be attributed to the fiber in the product.

This product is more of passive nutritional supplement that supports the over health and recovery of the athlete. This product is extremely versatile in the way of consumption as it can be used as a weight gainer when taken with food, but contains low enough amounts of calories and carbohydrates to be used for assisting in achieving muscular definition when used a meal replacement. The overall consensus of the product was quality calories and nutrition which helped accentuate the rate of recovery.

One serving of OX MRS is 2 scoops, which gives you 20 servings at cost of $49.99 directly from OX, which amounts to approximately $2.49 per serving which is average to above average for a normal protein supplement. This price may seem high, but this product is an all natural soy-less protein that combines vitamins, minerals, amino acids, joint support, and antioxidants.

The only negative would be that when used more than once per day the 20 serving tub depletes quite quickly and it would be good to see a 5 pound size at a discounted bulk price as well. The only other personal critique is that the product needs a to be slightly sweeter.

OX Nutrition is truly a hybrid nutritional supplement that provides more than simply caloric support to the athlete. The all natural ingredients coupled with all around nutritional support is consistent with the OX Nutrition mission to provide basic and effective supplements. It provided quality postworkout nutrients and recovery components in addition to helping reduce joint inflammation and providing antioxidants. This product is an all natural and pure product that is revolutionary in it’s overall concept and is highly recommended.
